Changing Fortunes
Note: This story was originally posted on my Sim Page at the Exchange, but I’ve posted it here as I will no longer be adding stories to the Exchange. Also this story is part of a trilogy which will continue as soon as Forefathers has been completed. In addition I am now using default replacements of Enayla’s skintones and eye colours, which is why the Broke family may look slightly different from how they normally appear
Although my parents Bob and Betty Newbie couldn’t afford to give me an ideal childhood, they always did their best to make sure I was well cared for and educated. After leaving school I got engaged to Skip Broke - as his name suggests, he wasn’t from a wealthy family either. Bob and Betty didn’t really approve of my relationship with Skip, who’d gained a reputation for wildness and flirting with anything in a skirt. However we eventually married, and a son named Dustin was born just after our first wedding anniversary.
When Dustin was about 10 years old, another son was born. We named him Beau, and like his elder brother he was the very image of his father. Although I didn’t know at the time, Skip had lost his job not long after Beau grew into a toddler, and was trying everything he could to find a way of supporting us all. Tragedy struck one afternoon while I was out shopping - when I got home I found Skip floating in the swimming pool, presumably after drowning.
After some time struggling alone, and with Dustin away at college, I didn’t know where to turn. As luck - or fate - would have it, there was a knock at the door on the evening of Beau’s birthday. I almost fainted when I opened the door and came face to face with my deceased husband. Seeing that I was soon to become a mother for the third time (I hadn’t discovered my pregnancy until a month after Skip’s "death"), Skip promised to tell me everything about his supposed accident as soon as the baby had been born.
As the family was growing, we moved to a larger home. Not long after the move our third child - a son we named Bob after my father - was born. Now that we were making an effort to change our fortunes, Skip embarked on a law enforcement career. That wasn’t the only surprise that he’d spring on me, as the following evening he presented me with a large diamond ring and begged me to marry him again. Of course I said yes straight away, and we saw our engagement - or re-engagement - as confirmation of the new beginning we’d planned for ourselves and our family.
