Changing Fortunes
A few weeks later we were married in a very private ceremony at home, with Dustin and Beau as the only witnesses. Dustin had grown up a lot since moving to Academie Le Tour, and doted on his younger brothers (Bob was now a toddler). In fact Dustin had also become engaged recently to his long term girlfriend, Angela Pleasant.
It wasn’t long before Bob grew into a child, and with Beau doing very well at school another move - to a smaller home - was planned. From the outside it didn’t look much smaller than our old house, but it was more manageable. A few weeks after we moved in, Skip decided that it was time to let me know why he’d faked his death. He began his confession by recounting how he found out that his best friend from childhood, Don Lothario, was living up to his name by cheating on Cassandra Goth with both of the Caliente sisters. None of the women had discovered what was going on, and Don was very proud of the fact that he was able to string along Cassandra - who would inherit a large slice of the Goth fortune when her father died - for so long.
Skip also knew that another of his friends, Darren Dreamer, was madly in love with Cassandra. It was obvious that Cassandra was better suited to Darren, and that he would make a much better husband than Don. "However that was only the start of the problem," he told me, "things became much worse when Don set his sights on Cassandra’s mother, Bella." I stared at my husband, speechless at his revelation. Skip went on to tell me how Don had bragged about his latest plan to ensare Bella, and how he’d overheard her telling Cassandra that she’d be the main beneficiary if anything happened to her. "Of course, that made Don even more eager to marry Cassandra. In fact he was desperate to marry her, as he’d started to lose a lot of money gambling Downtown. We’d always confided in each other, but when he told me of the plan he’d formed in order to get his hands on Cassandra’s fortune, I had to put a stop to it straight away."
"I told Bella everything that Don had said. She’d never really liked him, and was determined to put an end to his relationship with Cassandra. We came up with an idea to make everyone believe that she’d been abducted by aliens so that she could leave town safely. It wasn’t easy, but we decided to make Don part of the plan without him knowing. She’d visit him one evening and ask if she could borrow his telescope because hers was broken. After a while she asked him to make her a drink, and while he was out of the way she climbed down from his roof with the ladder I had waiting for her, while I set up an old searchlight I’d found at the scrap yard. Once she was safely hidden in a truck I’d borrowed, we drove a few yards down the street and I switched on the searchlight. We’d calculated the distances involved so that Don would see a bright light that suddenly vanished. Then of course he’d discover that Bella was gone."
"So," he concluded, "it was safer for everyone to believe that Bella had been abducted. Her insurance company wouldn’t pay out on the claim as it wasn’t a death, and of course they’d never accept the abduction theory. I pleaded with Bella to tell her family about our plan before we went through with it, but as much as it was going to hurt them to believe that she’d been taken by aliens, the truth would have been much worse. And of course I couldn’t tell you as we would have had to leave town as well - if Don had found out what I’d done he would have made sure I really vanished for good. That’s why I had to make everyone believe that I’d drowned. Cassandra had started to suspect Don of cheating, so as soon as I heard he’d left town after she dumped him it was safe for me to come back."
