Changing Fortunes
When he’d finished his story, he could see how much his "death" had really affected me, and how much it meant to me that he was back. "I heard that Mortimer Goth "encouraged" Don to leave town by paying off his gambling debts on condition that he never bothered the family again," he said once I’d stopped crying, "and Bella gave me $25,000 for helping her. $15,000 has been put aside for the boys and the rest is in a new bank account for us - apart from the money I spent on your ring of course!" I was so happy that I started crying again, and hugged Skip so much that he was sure he’d have broken ribs by the time I’d let him go.
So things really were improving for the family. Bob was growing up well and getting high grades, and Beau had recently enrolled at Academie Le Tour to study Economics. Dustin graduated Summa cum laude with a major in Political Science, and celebrated with an early afternoon party. Dustin and Angela married not long after graduating, and started their own family. They had four children - Elizabeth, Daniel, Mary and Claire. They all had their father’s blonde hair. We were very proud when Dustin became Mayor, especially when we remember how worried we’d been about him during his teenage years.
Beau was the next to get engaged, to Lucy Burb. I’d missed Bob’s birthday as I was working (I’d taken a job as a dishwasher - the extra money would be useful as Skip and I were determined to boost our savings). He was looking forward to starting college in a few weeks, and continued to study hard. Bob developed a crush on one of his school friends, Carmen Nanale, and was thrilled when she agreed to share a small house with him while they were at college; they too were engaged. I was also making progress, and got promoted at work within a couple of weeks. As time passed, Skip and I got older and took early retirement from our careers. However our age didn’t put a stop to our fun! As family life had always been important to me, I used my retirement as the perfect opportunity to write this story so that I would have something to pass on to my grandchildren.
Things really had changed for the better over the past few years, and Christmas had even more meaning with Skip around to see our boys grow into successful individuals with careers and families of their own. Even Santa paid a visit during one of our parties!
However time speeds on, and Skip and I cherished every year that we’d spent together. For our 40th wedding anniversary he booked the whole of Londoste for the evening - everything was perfect.
As our lives draw to a close we look back and remember how far we’ve come since we first met. We may be older and slower, but we have much to be grateful for. In addition to this story, my gift to the future generations of our family is the knowledge that anything in life is possible if you work hard, and even when things aren’t going your way you can change your fortunes …..
